Repositioning Cruises – an affordable way to cruise
The allure of a transatlantic voyage has always held a special place in my dreams.
From childhood memories of watching Love Boat, the idea of spending days at sea, basking on deck with nothing but the vast expanse of ocean ahead, seemed utterly enchanting.
And when considering the added bonus of significant discounts often associated with repositioning cruises, that’s cruises that are changing home ports, the appeal just grows stronger. The great thing about repositioning cruises is that they’re different every time. They usually start and end in different locations meaning each one is its own unique adventure.
Exploring Virgin Voyages unveils a refreshing approach to cruising, offering a more laid-back and casual atmosphere. Unlike traditional cruise lines, Virgin does away with formal dining protocols and dress codes, catering to a younger demographic seeking a relaxed experience at sea. Standing out as the ideal getaway for those who typically shy away from traditional cruising experiences, the adult-only policy means guests can savour a serene vacation free from the bustle of children.

In terms of accommodation, Virgin have curated cabins with thoughtful features such as beds that effortlessly convert into sofas during the day, maximising space for relaxation. Additionally, their innovative tablet system grants guests control over various room amenities, from lighting and entertainment to climate control and curtains.
One of the highlights of my voyage was indulging in quiet moments on the balcony, swaying gently in the red hammock with a captivating book in hand, immersing myself in the tranquil scenery as the ship gracefully sailed along. A truly serene and rejuvenating escape from the daily hustle and bustle.
The variety of dining options aboard Virgin Voyages ensures a culinary experience to suit every palate. I became enamoured with The Wake, Extra Virgin (especially their delectable affogato dessert), and Razzle Dazzle, where both the steak and curry left a lasting impression. And, of course, indulging in daily visits to the ice cream parlour became a delightful ritual.

For a laid-back daytime retreat, the Dock House beckons with its stylish Ibiza-inspired ambience, consistently exuding a vibrant atmosphere. Guests can enjoy live performances by talented solo artists and bands while relishing the cosy setting. And the tapas lunches on offer provide the perfect option for those seeking lighter fare.
The entertainment offerings aboard Virgin Voyages struck a perfect balance, appealing to even someone like me, who shies away from holiday-centric activities. We found the comedian especially enjoyable, delivering laughs that resounded throughout the ship. Moreover, the musical talents of both Daniel Park and Selki were captivating, their performances proving to be a highlight of our voyage. Their melodies could easily have filled our entire day, adding much to the overall pleasure of the experience.

It is important, however, to consider if a Virgin cruise, or any repositioning cruise, suits you. If you’re someone who relishes formal dining experiences, dinner with the captain, or a meticulously scheduled itinerary with every hour planned out, then a Virgin Voyages cruise may not align with your expectations.
Repositioning cruises offer a unique opportunity to explore the world, albeit with some caveats. Certain amenities may not always be available, particularly during days at sea when the ship needs to restock. And onboard Wi-Fi may not consistently provide perfect connectivity, but these are minor inconveniences that are more than compensated by the overall experience.

Despite some potential reservations, our time on board proved nothing short of exceptional. Initially apprehensive about spending eight days at sea, any doubts dissipated as we embraced the serenity of the ocean. The days stretched languidly, neither the first nor the last hurrying by.
The attentive staff further enhanced our voyage, addressing us by our first names and fostering a sense of camaraderie. Virgin’s approach to employee welfare was commendable, evident by the inclusive atmosphere where staff members were welcome to dine alongside guests on their days off. It’s a testament to Virgin’s commitment to valuing their employees, a quality that resonated deeply with us throughout our journey.
