Postcard from Santorini

A thousand sunsets. A thousand memories. A thousand heartbeats. Colours of red, blue, and gold streak the sky as the sun dips below the horizon…this is Santorini.

Poets have written about it, and artists have tried to capture its beauty, but nothing quite describes the magic of this tiny Greek island, rich in history and steeped in myth, nestling at the southern end of the Aegean Sea.

With a reputation for dazzling panoramas, romantic sunsets, and volcanic sand beaches, it has become not just one of the most photographed islands in the world, but earned a reputation as the island of love, a perennial favourite for honeymoons, and one of the most exclusive holiday destinations in the world.

Boutique hotels cascade down the cliffside in Oia, Santorini

On the west coast, sheer cliffs, shaped around the drowned crater of an ancient volcano, rise up from the turqoise sea, topped by the whitewashed buildings of Oia and Fira, the two main towns on the island. With breathtaking views, fabulous spas, and spectacular infinity pools, the boutique hotels on Santorini are among the best in Greece.

With its blue domes, whiter-than-white houses, and stunning vistas, Santorini seems almost unconsciously created for the Instagram age. As cruise ships land thousands of day-trippers to join the holiday throngs, the island really can, for better or worse, feel like a crowded party.

The supermodel of the Greek islands, Santorini is a real head-turner, whose blue domes and whitewashed villages are instantly recognised around the world. It’s a place to be seen. And a place to be photographed.
